Calgary Pest Control In The Spring

Spring Is In The Air

While the temperatures may still be a bit frosty, it’s not too early to be dealing with the many different pests that come with spring time in Calgary.

As the snow lines recede, the ground softens up, and the daytime temperatures begin to climb more steadily above zero, many pest issues will start to emerge, or begin to be noticed. The Richardson’s Ground Squirrels have been busy starting families with the young pups starting to emerge and play in the afternoon sun. The melting snow on Calgary lawns exposes the familiar track lines left by the voles who built their winter homes under the snow. Mice are moving around the gardens, tree beds and fence lines seeking food and new shelter opportunities with each warming Chinook. Skunks, raccoons, porcupines, and squirrels are all out gathering food and seeking out new den sites. Den sites that will serve as birthing dens for their young. The melting snow also exposes the ugly mess that pigeons can leave behind over winter. Many home owners are quite surprised to learn that pigeons don’t leave for the winter, and that their numbers can often double or triple throughout the winter months, if they have the right shelter. And the ants have even started emerging, sunning themselves, staking out territory and seeking out food and nesting opportunities. The pocket gophers will be building new tunnels and leaving their tell-tale mounds of dirt speckled across boulevards, green spaces and yards all over the city. With all of this building activity, now is the best time to get ahead of these critters and protect your home and property from damage.
